Future scenarios for heat waves

Heat waves are just one of the effects of climate change and global warming. Statistics show that annually (estimated from 1980 to 2016) about 2700 deaths on average in Europe are attributed to extreme high temperatures and prolonged heat waves. It should be noted here that the heatwave that hit Europe in 2003 was blamed for more than 70,000 deaths!

In addition to deaths, the impact of extreme high temperatures must also take into account the number of people who flee their area or need treatment because of fires. Projections for the future show that global warming will increase the frequency and severity of fires if no measures are taken to combat the rise in temperature.

If global temperatures rise by an average of 3°C in the future, a 'severe' heatwave could occur almost every year in southern Europe, while in other cooler parts of Europe it could occur every 3 to 5 years. This means that almost 300 million Europeans a year would be exposed to severe heat waves, compared to the almost 10 million exposed annually today.

And what about businesses and organisations? How can they anticipate and manage these climate events? What are the chances that your business or organization will have to manage a prolonged heat wave and/or extreme high temperatures in the coming years? How will this affect your facilities and infrastructure, your business operations, your supply chain and your energy needs? How will you adapt to a warming world?

What actions do you need to take to adapt your activities by 2050 to achieve emission reductions and gradually move towards the net-Zero targets to mitigate the climate impacts of your business or organisation's operations?

All of the above call for answers.

E-ON Integration's RiskClima platform, a SaaS service, helps you in understanding and managing heat wave and extreme weather situations in the geographical area where you operate.

RiskClima, by being populated with your raw internal data (CO2 emissions, kWh of energy consumed, locations of facilities, etc.) and comparing it with external environmental databases, will prepare a scenario of your company or organisation's operations towards future milestones. It will then provide you with mitigation recommendations and actions, quantified and planned on the horizon of the milestones towards the net-Zero targets.
